My impression about Africa, until I visited the continent for the first time at the end of 2009 was of poverty, ignorance, ill health and early death. During my visits I got first-hand experience of many other facets like corruption, environmental degradation, violation of basic rights and many other problems associated with Africa.
As an Indian I was well informed about the strong linkage of South Africa with Indian Freedom Movement, which is narrated by Nelson Mandela in his speech as, ‘India gave Barrister Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to South Africa and in return South Africa presented Mahatma Gandhi to India!’
My experience of working in Africa at the grass root level, which gave me several cultural shocks, coupled with insightful exposure of meeting senior bureaucratic leaders in various countries; shaped my views about challenges and opportunities in African agriculture.
